REYNOLDS, Ind.—In its eighth year of promoting dairy nutrition with an amazing 1,600-pound cheese sculpture at the Indiana State Fair, the American Dairy Association (ADA) of Indiana is pleased to add a new dimension to its positive public-relations message.

This year, for the first time, at the conclusion of the Fair, the organization is converting its massive cheese sculpture into green energy by turning its disposal over to Bio Town Ag, a unique farm and livestock operation that has achieved a 100-percent closed-loop model of sustainability.

The ADA’s cheese sculpture will merge with the organic-byproduct stream that perpetually feeds Bio Town Ag’s high-capacity anaerobic digester. There, the material is processed and converted into, among other useful outputs, fuel for generators that directly put power on the electric utility grid.

“We’re very pleased to partner with Bio Town Ag,” explains Jenni Purcell, the ADA of Indiana’s Director of Communications. “In all the years we’ve done the sculpture, we’ve always looked for responsible disposal methods, but this new concept of converting the cheese into real green energy is particularly gratifying.”

Purcell adds that the Dairy Association will likely make this sustainable-agriculture disposal method a constant for years to come.

About the Bio Town Ag Farm
Bio Town Ag is a 100-percent sustainable, zero-discharge, multigenerational livestock farming operation, featuring a 4.8 million gallon anaerobic digester.
Outputs from the digester include methane gas, water and a nutrient-rich fertilizer material. The gas is burned to power several on-site generators that directly put true “green” electricity on the grid, while the water, as irrigation, and natural fertilizer are applied to the row-crop fields of Bio Town Ag and other neighboring farm operations.

Bio Town Ag is an Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM)-permitted organic recycling facility. It maintains organic-recycling and renewable-energy certifications.
